When using a galvanised mesh with pets (eg birds, small animals etc) it is recommended that new galvanised wire mesh used in aviaries and pet enclosures be treated to remove excess zinc that could possibly harm pets.
Shave off any zinc spikes with a utility knife. The mesh should then be scrubbed with a mild solution of vinegar (2 cups in a bucket of water), and rinsed with clean water.
Wire netting mesh netting is manufactured by knitting together multiple wires to form the classic Hexagonal wire shape, making it heavy duty.
Netting manufactured with thinner wire is designed for light applications, whilst 1.4mm and 1.6mm heavy galvanised wire can be used in fencing applications.
